About Farr Academy

Farr Academy is a therapeutic day school serving students in grades 7 through 12 with a range of emotional and learning problems. We provide an array of services that meet the individual strengths and weaknesses of each student. Skilled teacher/counselors, small structured classes, group and individualized curriculum aligned to the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, one-to-one tutoring as needed, and college preparatory courses provide a comprehensive approach to meet the diverse needs presented by students. In addition, we offer multi-faceted physical and outdoor education, woodworking, studio art and an intensive school-to-career program.

Counseling and non-judgmental, non-punitive problem solving meetings are used to teach decision making as well as problem solving skills, through reflection and discussion. Additionally, the teaching of techniques and strategies to effectively manage anxiety, stress, frustration and anger are threaded throughout the program.

Referrals are accepted from public school systems, parents, legal guardians, mental health agencies, and the Departments of Social Services, Mental Health and Youth Services in collaboration with the public school.


Criteria for admission include, but are not limited to the following:
Farr Academy accepts students in grades 7-12 who fall within the average to above average range of intelligence.
Farr Academy accepts students whose cognitive testing is negatively impacted by emotional overlays or scatter that may indicate learning disabilities or ADHD.
Farr Academy accepts students diagnosed with emotional and/or behavioral problems and who may or may not have a learning disability or ADHD.

Other factors considered for admission include, but are not limited to:
The student's ability to perform within the Farr Academy environment.
The belief that Farr Academy can meet the student's educational, social, emotional, and/or behavioral needs as indicated on the IEP, in submitted reports and in the interview process.
The make up of the student body at the time of referral.
The expectation that parents/guardians and/or agency staff will remain actively involved in the student's progress.

Complete assessments including school records, academic evaluations, transcripts, psychological testing, family history, psychiatric evaluation if available, and any other pertinent information should be submitted prior to an intake interview. Although a pre-intake interview may be arranged before information is submitted if requested by a parent, students are discouraged from participating if the LEA has not indicated an intent to refer.

An intake interview is arranged for student, parent(s), referral source, and all other involved persons to meet with the Director, Parent Worker and Educational Coordinator. A tour of the school, preferably when school is in session is part of the process. Current students are often available to talk with students and their parents. In addition, parents of current or former students are often happy to talk with the parents of prospective students.

Typically students participate in two interviews. However, an additional interview or interviews may be requested when warranted.

Parents and public schools are notified if a student is accepted. If a student is not accepted, an explanation, and whenever possible, alternative recommendations are made.
