Student Assistance
Project Assist:
Michigan Conference constituents experiencing financial difficulties may apply for Project Assist. This is a three-way assistance program. The conference and academy match local church amounts up to the board-approved level. The application steps are as follows:
1. Request a Project Assist application from
the academy Business Office, or download the form here.
2. Fully complete the application.
3. Submit the application to your pastor.
4. After local church approval, submit the application to the academy for Michigan Conference Board of Education approval.
5. The amount credited is based on the actual days in attendance.
The Michigan Conference K-12 Board-approved level for the current year is:
Dormitory - $1,200; Village - $600
Worthy Student
Worthy Student Fund: For students in need, a Worthy Student Fund has been set up. Funds are allocated as available by committee. Requests should be made to the business manager.
Student Labor: Student labor is available for the purpose of teaching students the dignity of labor and defraying school expenses. Earnings will be credited to the student\'s account for labor performed. These monies will not be paid in cash except for incentive pay earned in the industries. Each student residing in the dormitory will be expected to willingly work as assigned.
FACTORS AFFECTING WORK:
Paper Work:
Each student must complete Step 3 of the Application Process and provide all necessary documentation and employment forms before they can be employed by Great Lakes Adventist Academy. For Application Process, please click HERE.
Age:
A student must be at least 14 years of age to work.
Work Assignments:
Work assignments are determined by qualifications, age restrictions and job
availability.
Project Assist:
Students receiving Project Assist or other forms of scholarship assistance must be willing to work assigned by the Student Labor Coordinator. This will most often mean working at the mill or available industries, since such work maximizes the student\'s earning potential. Throughout the school year students may be asked to work on Sundays, home leaves and/or vacations to help keep their account current.
Tithe
Students are encouraged to pay tithe on their earnings. When a student enrolls at GLAA they may fill out a form requesting that their tithe be automatically taken out of their check each month. The tithe will be remitted to the Michigan Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
Cash Withdrawal
Parents/students may deposit cash in the Business Office for withdrawal to care for incidental needs. Withdrawal is permitted only when money is on deposit in the student bank.
Student Accident Insurance
Student Accident Insurance: A student accident insurance with secondary-coverage is available. It provides for minimal payments only after the family insurance coverage is expended, or if there is no other primary insurance coverage. Coverage is for most inconsequential injuries incurred while in attendance at the academy. It does not cover medical expenses incurred by causes other than accidents and is insufficient for major accident expenses. These situations must be paid by the parents or sponsors and/or family insurance policy. A student accident report must be filed when the accident occurs to receive benefits.
Workman\'s Compensation Insurance:
For accidents that occur while the student is actually employed, the academy is covered under the Worker\'s Compensation Insurance Act. If, however, a student is to receive the benefits of this coverage, an accident report must be filed with the academy when the accident occurs.
