Referrals for admission are generally received from a public school district's Child Study Team. After a preliminary review of the student's records by DVSEC staff, a meeting is arranged with the Child Study Team member, the student's parents/guardian and the director of DVSEC.

Tuition is state subsidized so there is no cost to the parent or guardian of the student to attend.
